Efficient Geothermal Boreholes for Renewable Heating
As the demand for cleaner, greener energy grows, geothermal boreholes offer a practical and environmentally responsible solution for heating and cooling properties. At Jackson Drilling, we support homeowners, developers, and commercial clients in making the switch to ground source heating with expertly drilled, high-performing boreholes designed to suit each site.
Open Loop Geothermal
Harnessing the Earth’s natural heat through geothermal boreholes is an increasingly popular and sustainable way to heat homes, offices, and commercial properties. By utilising the thermal conductivity of the ground beneath a site, ground source heating provides an efficient and eco-friendly energy solution.
Widely adopted across the globe, ground source heating is gaining momentum in the UK as a reliable alternative to traditional heating systems. However, not all sites are suitable for geothermal installations. To ensure feasibility, we recommend conducting a Thermogeological Assessment alongside a site visit. This assessment helps determine key factors such as soil and rock composition, groundwater conditions, and the optimal borehole design for your property.
The depth and number of boreholes required depend on the heat pump system design and the findings of the Thermogeological Assessment. Jackson Drilling specializes in drilling and installing boreholes for both Closed Loop and Open Loop geothermal systems, ensuring precision and efficiency in every project.
We are proud to be members of the GSHPA (Ground Source Heat Pump Association), ensuring we adhere to the highest industry standards for geothermal heating and cooling solutions. We also provide electrofusion welding, pressure testing, and final connections to the heat exchanger, offering a complete solution for your geothermal heating system.

Closed Loop Geothermal
A closed loop system consists of one or more boreholes drilled and fitted with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) piping, known as a “loop.” A heat transfer fluid (a glycol/water mixture) circulates through the loop, absorbing heat from the ground before transferring it to the heat pump, which then distributes warmth throughout the property.
Typically, a geothermal borehole is drilled to a 150mm diameter and fitted with a 40mm HDPE loop. Once installed, the borehole is backfilled to optimize heat transfer. Depending on geological conditions, this backfill consists of either a gravel pack or thermally enhanced grout (thermogrout).
After installation, the system undergoes a pressure test to ensure there are no leaks before being connected to the heat pump, ensuring efficient and reliable operation.
