A closed loop system consists of a borehole or a number of boreholes, that have been drilled and installed with plastic (HDPE) pipe or a “loop”. A heat transfer fluid (Glycol/Water mix) is pumped around the loop and collects heat from the ground and then runs to the Heat Pump and is used to heat the property.

A Geothermal Borehole is usually drilled in 150mm diameter and then installed with a 40mm HDPE loop. Once the loop is in the ground, then depending on the geological conditions it is either surrounded by a gravel pack or a thermogrout is pumped into the borehole to backfill the hole and provide a pathway for heat transfer. Once the loop has been installed then it is pressure tested to ensure that there are no leaks and then it can be connected up to the heat pump.
