Case Study

Windowless Sampling, Domestic Property

Borehole investigation inside a domestic property using a modular windowless sampling rig to assess kerosene contamination.

The Problem:

Following a leak from a domestic kerosene tank, a ground investigation was required to determine the extent of the contamination.

After an initial programme of works which included windowless sampling using a standard rig in the grounds of the property further investigation was required within the footprint of the building. Access to the borehole locations was inside a domestic property with access through a standard front door.

The Solution:

Jackson Drilling mobilised their purpose built modular windowless sampling rig to site. The rig was carried in to the house and built up over the first borehole location following coring out of the floor slab. Mess from the coring of the floor slab was contained using a bund and a wet/dry vacuum cleaner.

Being a high ceilinged property the rig was used with its maximum headroom of 2.30m.

Floor protection was laid down to protect the property during the rigs operation.

Windowless sampling was conducted to 6m below ground level in to the chalk bedrock to allow monitoring of the contamination.

Power was supplied to the power pack from a generator sited outside of the house, through an open window. This removed the need for fume extraction inside the building.

Key Features

Cut–down Windowless Sampling Rig

  • Mobilised to site in a box trailer towed by a 4×4 or a panel van.
  • Powered by an electric hydraulic power pack – the generator can be sited outside of the building if required.
  • Ideal for difficult access or limited headroom borehole positions.
  • SPT and DPSH tests can be undertaken.
  • Windowless samples are recovered in a rigid plastic liner.
  • CSCS and NVQ level 2 qualified drill crews.
  • Instrumentation can be installed in boreholes upon completion.
